The tour of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in the Russian tours is an extensive program where you will get acquainted with the museum of city sculpture and with the main active cathedral of St. Petersburg.
☞ The legend has it that the history of the Alexander-Nevsky Lavra “The Alexander’s temple” as it was called in St. Petersburg in the old times dates back to 1710. While exploring the surroundings of St. Petersburg Peter the Great took notice of the sight where the Russian prince Alexander Nevsky destroyed the enemy Swedish forces in 1240. The tsar named this sight “Victory” and ordered a monastery in the name of the Holy Trinity and St. Alexander Nevsky to be built here. Metropolitan Theodosius accompanying the tsar put up a cross with an inscription “a monastery is to be built here”.
In fact we know that the above-mentioned decisive battle itself took place quite further up the river Neva, in the place where the river Izhora flows into the Neva. Was this error of Peter the Great intentional? Most probably yes.
During the The Alexander Nevsky Lavra walking tour of the St. Petersburg excursions you will learn which ideas and thoughts lead Peter the Great to this “mistake”…
One of the oldest buildings on the territory of the Lavra is the church in the name of the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary
This church built on the project of Domenico Trezzini was a burial vault of the royals, military commanders and famous statesmen. In 1724 Peter the Great ruled that the relics of St. Alexander Nevsky were to be transferred here. In different times P. I. Yaguzhinsky, A. A. Bezborodko, A. M. Golytsin and many others were buried in the Annunciation church. Among them a distinguished Russian Field-Marshal Alexander Vasilyevych Suvorov. This is not the complete list of the famous names. The Lazarevsky cemetery or “the City of the Dead”, its 18th century name is part of the Lavra.
Many of the tombstones are remarkable monuments of the funerary St. Petersburg monument architecture
The museum of the city sculpture was organized in Lazarevskoye cemetery and the adjacent Tikhvin cemetery and the Annunciation and St. Lazar church. Many remarkable tombstones from all cemeteries were brought here from other city cemeteries. The history of St. Petersburg and its prominent citizens shall unveil before you.
